Sensitive Skin

We are currently seeing a huge increase in people experiencing sensitive skin issues. Some experience mild, occasional flare-ups while others deal with constant redness, breakouts, excessive dryness, and discomfort. The three main symptoms of sensitized skin are redness, compromised barrier and dehydration. Skin barrier damage is quite common these days and often this is the result of using harsh products that strip the skin of its natural oils. Over the past decade products containing acids for chemical exfoliation have become very fashionable, but overuse of these products has led to a breakdown in the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it vulnerable to environmental factors and pollutants. Sensitivity also increases with age and on average, skin becomes 10 percent dryer each decade after the age of 20. The less moisture skin retains, the weaker the cellular barrier and the more irritants get in and wreak havoc. All these factors contribute to dehydrated skin and inflammation, the result being irritated, damaged skin. While repairing your damaged skin barrier, the focus should be on keeping your skin hydrated, calm, and protected.

With this in mind we have researched and formulated a range of products, based on flower & plant (botanical) extracts to soothe, hydrate and repair sensitive skin. Flower extracts of St John’s wort, calendula, chamomile, cornflowers, linden and butterfly pea flowers soothe and reduce inflammation. Calendula also hydrates and improves circulation, whilst St John’s wort helps promote the absorption of these active ingredients. Paired with nourishing oils, including rosehip oil, olive squalane, kalahari melon seed oil and rice bran oil – contributing essential fatty acids, deep nourishment and supporting collagen production. The addition of hyaluronic acid which acts as a shield against moisture loss and free radical damage, drawing moisture from its surroundings to revitalise the skin’s surface. Niacinamide – Vit B3 – helps stimulate the production of ceramides that are part of the skin’s barrier function. It also reduces redness, inflammation, acne and protects the skin from environmental damage. Combined with the soothing properties of rose, lavender and helichrysum hydrosols (flower waters), our ESSENCE OF FLOWERS range is a true celebration of the healing properties of flowers and other botanical extracts.
